 Lesson 24 | -ebil Can/Could

I like to think that most of the lessons we've published so far on this site are songs that are both education and enjoyable, the type you'd like to listen to over and over as you memorize the lyrics. I'm afraid this one falls short of that, but it's certainly ideal for exhibiting an imported verbal ending in Turkish, the -ebil ending which adds to verbs the meaning of "can" or "could".

The singer, Kayahan, is a successful recording artist and composer. Many of the songs performed by Nilüfer, who we heard in Lesson 9, were composed by Kayahan, and he has many high-selling albums of his own. For some reason this video made me want to watch this gem from the 90s. The song is about all the things that Kayahan could do for the woman he loves, and he makes extensive use of the verbal tense used to express this notion.

The -ebil is not a verb tense so much as it is an affix that can add meaning to verbs. It comes from the verb bilmek, "to know", and can be added to any verbal tense. Verbs using -ebil are conjuated by adding -ebil to the verb stem and then adding the verbal ending of your choice. However, the most common tense used with -ebil is the aorist or the -ir ending covered in Lesson 14 and elsewhere. This gives the general sense of can or could.
