In Lesson 15, we learned about the basic use of the conditional ending -se and have encountered various uses along the way. In this lesson, we'll learn how to use the conditional in a counterfactual sense through the word "keşke," meaning "if only".
The artist in this lesson is Hüseyin Yalın, known by his stage name of Yalın. There's not a whole lot to say about Yalın for our purposes, other than his public persona in Turkey is more that of the soft spoken type, which has earned him many followers in a Turkish pop music scene dominated by very big personalities.
This catchy hit from 2005 revolves around the word "keşke" and these if only sentences. In the chorus, Yalın says "keşke oyunlar oynamasaydık" or "if only we had not played games". The verb "oynamasaydık" is comprise of a conditional ending with the addition of a past tense ending at the end: oynama-sa-ydı-k. Here's how you would conjugate it for other people.
